Signs from the Universe: Lucky Pennies

lucky_pennies

I have an odd habit of finding pennies. I don’t try to find them (it’s a rule) and I don’t actually look for them, but they appear anyway. I tracked this odd penny finding tendency for a few months out of sheer curiosity. The most I found in one month was twenty-one. I averaged ten.

On one day, I found three of them in completely different locations. It kind of blew my mind and I kept looking over my shoulder to see if someone was following me.

They are in random places: parking lots, walking trails, stores, restaurants, streets, and even the beach.

I am always pleasantly surprised when I see them and wonder why pennies and not dimes or quarters? Is there something about copper, or whatever pennies are made of these days, that cause them to fall out of pockets or wallets more often? Or, are we just more careless with this particular coin?

“Finding a penny and picking it up is a relatively new spin on an old superstition. Many years ago, people believed that metal was a gift from the gods, given to man for protection against evil. That developed into the notion that metal brings good luck. In fact, this idea is partially represented in the practice of hanging horseshoes over their doorways, wearing charm bracelets, and carrying good luck coins.”  From wisegeek.org

Usually I am in deep contemplation, wrestling with a question or seeking an answer, when my eye is drawn to the shiny metal object. Of course, because I tend to put a lot of meaning into things these days, I always see them as a sign. It is hard not to do this after all the serendipitous experiences over the last few years.

In fact, I am writing this in an auto shop while waiting for my daughter’s car to be repaired. Pondering whether or not this is worthy of a blog post, I look down (I swear this happened) and spy a penny on the floor under the chair. I take that as a “yes”.

I’m just wondering: do you find pennies, or perhaps other things, that regularly show up and signal encouragement from the universe?

    Dianna-

After my mom passed away last year…it was dimes. My niece felt like dimes were a sign from ‘nana’ and in fact my mom had a collection of dimes in a gourd on her dresser. About a week after she passed, I dropped my wallet and three dimes fell out…only dimes, from a full change purse…

I haven’t found dimes in a while…maybe I’m not allowing myself to be open…too sad.
