Healing Grit Transforms Loss Into Beauty

I love the word grit. I heard it used a couple years ago by Jen Louden and it stuck with me ever since.

It is defined in the dictionary as, “courage and resolve; strength of character.” I think it is essential to a well-lived life and also important for anyone on the healing trajectory. Now, the word even has its own book.

I think of it as the fuel for our healing endeavors.

But where does one find grit? I don’t know that I have always had it. I felt it rush in when I knew I wanted to make things better for my children on this journey. It was a quiet resolve that entered my being and it filled me from head to toe with a sense of gritty righteousness.

Perhaps people are born with it, or it is born from giving ourselves the deep and necessary permission to follow a dream or idea to its lair with utter abandon and sacrifice. That’s what it feels like to me.

A sacred vow to the dream you believe in.

Digging deeper than you ever have before to make something happen.

My definition of healing grit is the desire to transform any loss into beauty. To learn the lesson buried in the ruins and use it to live a better life. It is saying a definitive NO to becoming smaller, and a bold YES to living expansively.

Grit also provides permission, something we all seem to need these days. Permission to heal. Permission to live. Permission to be ourselves. With the committed energy of grit, one can do the unimaginable and be much the wiser for it.

The other day, I was speaking to a very kind soul about my work, and the fact that there were times when I felt so overwhelmed, and she said, “You know, you just have to strap on your jet-pack everyday and keep going. Fill it up with courage, fierce resolve and compassion, and point yourself in the direction of your goals. Never stop taking the next step.”

She was telling me to find my grit and get back in the trenches. She was reminding me that healing grit transforms loss into beauty.

How can you get back in the trenches and point yourself toward that next step that is leading you toward a better life and world?

Where can you tap into the grit that will see you through to the beauty?

As always, sending love.
